Grimsdale and Webb transistorized computer | 1953

In November 1953, the University of Manchester's experimental Transistor Computer became operational, marking a significant milestone as the first stored-program computer primarily using transistors instead of vacuum tubes. The shift from vacuum tubes to transistors faced delays due to early reliability issues in transistor manufacturing.

The Transistor Computer had two versions: a prototype operational in 1953 and a full-size version commissioned in April 1955. The 1953 model featured 92 point-contact transistors and 550 diodes from STC, with a 48-bit machine word. The 1955 version upgraded to 200 point-contact transistors and 1,300 diodes, consuming 150 watts of power. However, early transistors experienced considerable reliability problems, resulting in an average error-free runtime of only 1.5 hours in 1955. Additionally, the machine incorporated a few vacuum tubes in its clock generator, so it wasn't a fully transistorized computer.
