SCELBI

SCELBI

SCELBI was an early microcomputer model based on the Intel 8008 processor. The SCELBI Computer Consulting Company was founded in 1973 by Nat Wadsworth, and the company's name was derived from SCientific-ELectronics-BIology. In 1974, the SCELBI 8H model was released to the market, which was available either fully assembled or in kit form. The kit included five basic circuit boards and featured memory expansion up to 16KB (16,384 bytes). The company also offered various input/output devices, such as a keyboard, telegraph transceiver interface, an oscilloscope interface for displaying alphabetic characters, and a cassette tape interface for data storage. The basic system could perform input/output tasks through a front panel with 11 switches and LEDs.

The company also provided a version of the BASIC programming language called SCELBAL, designed specifically for the SCELBI 8H model. With optional modules for string and transcendental functions, the system could run on small memory configurations. SCELBAL was sold in book format and was designed for use on similar platforms based on the 8008 or 8080 processors.

The initial 8H model was discontinued by the end of 1974, and an improved 8B model was introduced. However, fewer than 150 board sets and assembled systems were sold. In 1975, systems based on the faster and more flexible 8080 processor were introduced, reducing the demand for the 8008-based products. The company discovered that there was a high demand for books on microcomputers and published several books. Eventually, this publishing business was sold in 1982.
